Eric and I spent all day in the hotel and finally left at about 9pm to head to the airport. We would first fly to Amsterdam, and then part ways as he flew to Seattle through Minneapolis and I flew directly to Detroit.
The Cape Town to Amsterdam flight was pretty uneventful. We got the very back row where the chairs wouldn’t fold back as far as the others, which became a problem when the guy in front of me decided to fold his as far as he could.
I had almost a five hour wait in Amsterdam before catching the flight to Detroit. Eric’s flight took off earlier, so I hung out in a book store looking for something to read. Strangely enough, about 15 minutes into looking for books, Snoop Dogg walked into the store with a few huge body guard guys. He certainly wasn’t in superstar character; he just bought a can of Pringles and some chocolates and left. Make no mistake, though — it was definitely Snoop Dogg. The clerks at the store were exchanging glances and one of them confirmed his identity after he had paid. Interesting sighting… I bought a paper copy of The God Delusion (which I had been reading on my phone) and went my on way.
Before boarding the flight, I had to go through an additional layer of security at the gate. I had forgotten to check my pocket knife from Europe 2004 trip in my main bag, and while European flights don’t care (I got to Amsterdam with it in my pocket), the security guard found it and told me I couldn’t take it back to the US. I’m usually hard pressed to open a box much less kill a pilot with the knife, but US airline security is retarded like that. Add this to the list of things I will need to replace when I get home.
Final flight tally:
Flight count: 17
Time spent on a plane or in an airport: 81 hours
Stuff left behind:
iPhone, sunglasses, camera lens cap, kick ass swiss army knife
Upon arriving home, I immediately threw my cloths in the laundry. I didn’t even bother with my socks, and instead threw them away.
Africa was amazing. It’s good to be home.
